Description
Sweet, poetic and refreshing.
This wood sculpture presents 3 hummingbirds foraging on the sweet nectar of spring flowers. Looking fresh out, the flowers look real so vivid they are. Notice the details on the wings of the hummingbirds and the finesse of the flower pistils, all in a raw butternut log.

The artist
Martin Giasson
Saint-Jean-Port-Joli

I grew up with two uncles who were sculptors and passed their passion on to me. In 1967 I made my first wood carving. Then, in 1973 I started practising the art professionally. I describe myself as an artisan rather than an artist.
I’ve had the chance to work with great figures of my region and learn from each of them. For nine years, I spent my summers with Antoine Bérubé. It was my school of sculpture. I spent the following summers with Jacques and André-Médard Bourgault, with whom I learned a lot. Later in my career, I exhibited in Rimouski, Québec and Victoriaville.
To me, transforming wood is a privilege. Working and creating something from a tree… it’s fascinating! I believe that the revival of sculpture in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli is important so that this art does not disappear.
