Portrait of the ceramist Élizabeth Hamel

Graduated at the Maison des métiers d'art de Québec, I have been devoting myself exclusively to the creation of utilitarian porcelain works for more than 15 years. At the heart of my studio located in Quebec, each step of my creative process is executed with meticulousness and particular attention to detail.

Through porcelain, I express myself with sincerity and authenticity. Each of my creations is the result of several years of artistic exploration and the fruit of an incessant quest for perfection. Thanks to a distinctive know-how, each piece that I create is the fruit of a unique artisanal and artistic mastery. Through a complex firing process in a gas oven, the exteriors of my porcelain exhibit an immaculate whiteness, with a "copper red" enamel on the inside deploying singular and sought-after effects, oscillating between deep reds and suave celadons.

Concerned about bringing art into your daily life, I merge aesthetics and functionality through my medium, and it is with an unwavering passion that I create superior quality utilitarian works with a unique character. Minimalist in appearance, my pieces are both modern and very refined, imbued with elegance, delicacy and lightness.

Upkeep

It is best to wash this ceramic by hand, but it can tolerate the dishwasher.

Creation process

Élizabeth Hamel uses a very special cooking technique, oxygen reduction cooking. Using her gas oven, the artist meticulously controls the amount of oxygen in the oven. It is through this control over oxygen that the artist intervenes on the color of the interior glaze of the pieces.During a strong presence of oxygen, the copper contained in the glaze oxidizes (much like a copper roof) and creates a finish declined in different intensities of greens. At a lower oxygen concentration, the pieces suffered what is called “reduction” and the glaze turns red. The red varies from piece to piece and sometimes more than one color is found on the same piece due to variations in oxygen levels in different places in my oven.
