Description

Wooden tool for mending clothes

  • Darning eggs are handy tools for patching up holes in clothes. Their shape allows the fabric to be stretched well while protecting your fingers from the needle, thus facilitating the repair.
  • Completely natural and handcrafted.
  • 2¼'' diameter x 7½'' long

Origin of the object

The darning egg is a derivative of the darning mushroom or glover's egg. It is therefore an old sewing tool. It is most often composed of a slightly flattened half-ball and a handle.

Although it is a rather unknown object these days, its use is nevertheless simple and so practical! Indeed, it suffices to insert it into the garment to be mended, vis-à-vis the hole to be darned. Its shape keeps the tissue taut to facilitate repair.

Several formats of darning mushroom exist, in order to adapt to the various addicts to be repaired. Sometimes their bases are larger, for wider breaks, or narrower to slip easily into the sleeve of a small garment, for example.

Like most tools of yesteryear, darning eggs allow for mending instead of throwing away. As a bonus, the more they are used, the more their wood becomes imbued with a unique patina!

Portrait of Attila Hrubos

As an emerging Hungarian artist recently established in Quebec, my arrival in this area was almost accidental. I discovered a deeply-rooted tradition of wood carving and became passionate about this material.

When I create objects I am aware of the responsibility that rests on my shoulders and the positive impact that I can have on the world. I work primarily with recovered wood, but also explore possibilities with all sorts of other materials. I aspire to prolong their lifespan and I love the idea of creating something beautiful with material that has been discarded. I prefer hand tools as they provide a unique character to my pieces.

Through my work, I wish to honour the creator's wisdom. Personally, I strive to become the best possible version of myself.
