Description
Book written by Jean-François Blanchet and hand-bound in limited art edition by Anick Gosselin
- Médard Bourgault, first a sailor and then a carpenter, was at the origin of an original wood carving movement which underwent a phenomenal evolution in the 20th century thanks to the help of his brothers André and Jean-Julien. The Three Berets, as they will eventually be called because of their headgear - a symbol of their status as artists - train apprentices, both girls and young people, who themselves become workshop masters, so that several hundred sculptors and woodworkers will live from this trade. Saint-Jean-Port-Joli was then recognized as the capital of wood carving.
- This book presents their fascinating history as well as the particular context which favored the exceptional development of this village of the Côte-du-Sud which went from 2,241 inhabitants in 1931 to 3,370 in 1991, while many other villages in Quebec are emptying out in favor of the cities.
